Today was pretty low key.  The kids spent the day playing around the farm with the cousins.  Sam had a particularly fun time as he cruised up and down the farm road on the quad. At night we lit a few warm up fireworks for the kids.  The above is Brent making a ring of fire at a 1 or 2 second exposure.  I took a few shots towards sunset  of some of the sites around the farm.

Today we had the third straight day of crazy weather.  This afternoon the dark clouds rolled in, the lightning cracked, and the rain poured.  It was coming down in buckets as it has the past three days.  Later today on my drive home the clouds were reforming to the west over the foothills creating some dramatic sun rays as the sun poked through two existing holes in the cloud cover.  I didn’t have my camera so no photos of that, but when I got home there was a storm forming over head while the sunset was unobstructed making for some strong sunlight at the same time there was some serious rain starting up again.  I took a quick drive down the road and caught the following image of a lightning strike with a deep golden glow from the sunset followed by the dark of the storm with a purple hue around the lightning strike.  I took this with my 11-16mm lens at 16mm.  There was some seriously yellow light hitting some grass making the photos look totally fake (I didn’t post the most dramatic of those images).

20110716 Water Drop Shots, a set on Flickr.
In an effort to avoid working out I decided to practice a few water drop shots (my first) with a single speed light (SB-700).  I set the camera on manual.  Shutter speed 250, Aperture 8, and ISO 100 using my kit 18-105mm lens from my D7000.  Ok, well, now that that is done I will have to confront the inevitable and start exercising.  I am picking up the family tonight and am excited to have them back with me.

Went to Sammy’s soccer gmae out near my work. Went home and pumped up the front tire on my mountain bike which has a slow leak and took a quick (or not so quick) bike ride to Chatfield reservoir for some sunset photos.

Today we drove home from Midway back to Denver, CO. The kids were pretty good—only a few minor scuffles. I was suprised at how easily we were able to load the car with all of the stuff we had acquired over Christmas. We drove through Cheyenne on I-80 and the family was good about letting me stop a few times to snap a few photos.

Today Sam and I went to get a haircut. There was over an hour long wait since most have this Monday off due to the new year. We put our names on the list and went to look at small point and shoot cameras that allow you to run them in full manual. I have been wanting to have something like that for those times when you just don’t want to or can’t bring the full DSLR rig. I haven’t decided on anything to purchase as of yet. We spent the morning straightening and putting away all the Christmas stuff. It was a pretty uneventful day and now we are all gearing up for tomorrow and the start of the “real world”. It is always painful coming off vacation and especially when we have been out to Midway.

Via Flickr: Over lunch a few small flakes of snow began to fall. Over the west the clouds gathered and then out of nowhere the sun emerged for about 20 minutes. Sammy bought a small basketballbackboard today. Sophie is off at the Western Stockshow with her friend (taking in a dog show while she is there). Fischer is playing video games non-stop. This photo is a 3 exp HDR (0,-2,2).
